Josie's Story

JosieJosie is one of thousands of animal victims that managed to survive Hurricane Katrina, only to find themselves homeless and alone. Thankfully, Josie's story has a happy ending...

Volunteer Susan Krieb went to New Orleans to assist with animal rescue efforts. There, in the first kennel of the row she was assigned, was a skinny brown dog with eyes full of sadness, fear and confusion. "I was completely drawn into her eyes instantly," says Susan.

When Susan entered the kennel, Josie shyly moved closer with hopeful eyes and pressed her face into the volunteer's chest. In that moment, Susan imagined the heartbreak Josie must have endured and she knew this dog would be coming back home to Kentucky with her.

During the final two days that Susan was to be in New Orleans, a huge adoption fair was held in hopes of re-homing orphaned pets. Josie was walked through the crowds, but no one gave the skinny, plain brown dog a second glance. When she saw that no one would offer Josie a new home, Susan made the necessary arrangements for her adoption! Josie now lives with Susan and her other animals here in Kentucky. Her rescuer says the pup is spoiled rotten and, other than an understandable fear of rainstorms (and water in general), Josie loves life!

When describing the experience, Susan says it's hard to believe Josie is such a happy dog! "Josie" was named for the main character in North Country. "That girl went through some really rough times, but never lost who she was inside," says Susan.

I am very glad to have met Susan and Josie; she was so much fun to photograph. Josie is such a sweet girl and I felt her story needed to be shared with other animal activists. Thank you Susan!      -Crystal
